"Huge is the only word there is to describe how important the new Middle
School is to our overall arts program. For the first time we will have well-designed,
dedicated space for choral music, instrumental music, and dance."
BARBARA WEINSTEIN,
FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT HEAD
NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL
Learning at Country Day has always eclipsed the neat rows of desks and teachers at the chalkboards.
Our Middle School program is dedicated to innovative teaching.
The new Middle
School will consist of three
buildings around an open, central lawn. The classrooms
are designed with an eye to the flexible needs of our Middle School program. From group collaboration
to individual projects, to safe and secure storage areas — the Middle School will open up horizons
of exploration and creativity that will match best-teaching practices.
State-of-the-art technical
infrastructure will provide both wired and wireless options to every classroom. Classrooms will
be about 200 square feet larger with each pair of rooms sharing outdoor space that extends the
learning environment. Science classrooms will meet the National Science Teachers’ Association
standard of 1,200 square feet, and will have four lab stations for hands-on learning so important
to understanding scientific concepts. There will also be a 20-station computer lab.
Ever cognizant of the Country Day commitment to developing the scholar, artist and athlete of
character in every child, nearly 4,000 square feet will be devoted to dance and music. For the
first time Country Day will have dedicated spaces for these activities. A 73-seat capacity
orchestra room, a choral room large enough for about 70 students, an individual practice room,
a dance/performance studio, and lockable storage will truly tell our children that we are firmly
behind their development and growth as citizens of the world.
The new Middle School will open
up fresh vistas to students and teachers, alike, as they navigate together this critical developmental
phase.
